Future Acts, Mining and Exploration Unit

The NQLC’s Engagement and Development Support Team is comprised of the PBC Support Unit (PBCSU) and Future Acts, Mining and Exploration (FAME) Unit.

The FAME Unit is staffed with Legal Officers, Project Officers and Administration Officers.

The FAME Unit provides support to registered native title claimants and prescribed bodies corporate (PBCs) seeking assistance with future act matters intended on their traditional lands, particularly those related to mining and exploration and other infrastructure projects. FAME can also provide advice and assistance in negotiating Cultural Heritage Management Agreements under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (Qld).

The FAME Unit offers a range of support services including legal representation, agreement negotiation and dispute resolution. They review and notify traditional owners of future act notices (FANs) received and assist them in responding.

Where a FAN is related to mining or infrastructure projects, the FAME Unit will also take instructions to negotiate and draft agreements, including Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs), between the registered native title claimants or PBC and the proponent and also provide logistical and other support during the negotiations and also in implementing the agreements themselves.

In addition to the above, the FAME Unit delivers capacity development activities to prescribed bodies corporate (PBCs) to support, strengthen and consolidate their administrative and management practices especially in the context of dealing with third parties.

For further enquiries, please contact the FAME Unit on either 07 4042 7000 or fameunit@nqlc.com.au.
