Dear NQLC Member

RE: North Queensland Land Council Native Title Representative Body Aboriginal Corporation (NQLC) 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) extended to 30 June 2020.

I am writing to advise all members of the NQLC that, following a request from the NQLC Board of Directors, on 12 February 2020 NQLC received confirmation from the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) granting an extension to the date for the NQLC 2019 AGM to be held. Please note that the date by which the NQLC isrequired to hold its 2019 AGM is now no later than 30 June 2020.

Many members will know from recent correspondence that the Board of NQLC is proposing to restructure the NQLC’s current governance model and corporate structure.  This is in order to accommodate new economic development and community service functions for the NQLC.

During recent months the NQLC’s Board of Directors’ Executive Committee has been holding community engagement meetings throughout the representative region. These have also been referred to as‘roadshows’. During these roadshows the Executive Committee received overwhelming support for a restructure of the NQLC and for the members to be involved in the co-development of a new structure.

Accordingly the NQLC is proposing to hold Land Summits in both Cairns and Townville in April/May of this year for its members. The purpose of the Summits is for the NQLC Board to present its proposed structure and governance model for discussion and feedback with theNQLC’s members. Following this will be the final presentation of the proposed restructure and governance model (and accompanying Rule changes) for endorsement by the NQLC membership at a Special General Meeting to be held toward the end of June 2020, prior to the NQLC’s Annual General Meeting.

The office of the NQLC remains focused on achieving positive native title outcomes through its Legal, Research, PBC Support and Future Acts, Mining and Exploration Units. It is ‘business as usual’ on all operational fronts so rest assured that native title claims, PBC Support and Future Acts will not be effected by the proposals and will continue to progress accordingly.

Further communication regarding the Cairns and Townsville Land Summits is to come however should you have any queries in the interim please do not hesitate to contact this office on ph: 4042 7000 of freecall: 1800 814 779.

Yours sincerely

Steve Ducksbury

Chief Executive Officer
