NOTICE OF JIRRBAL COMMUNITY INFORMATION MEETINGS

Jirrbal People #4 (QUD983/2015) Native Title Claim

North Queensland Land Council (NQLC) is holding a series of Jirrbal community information sessions to
consult with Jirrbal People and provide information about important matters concerning their native title
claim prior to the authorisation meeting scheduled for 6 December 2022. The information sessions will be
held at the places and on the dates as listed below:

  • CAIRNS | Monday 14 November 2022: Rydges Esplanade, 209-217 Abbott St, Cairns City 9am to 4pm
  • TOWNSVILLE & PALM ISLAND | Tuesday 15 November 2022: Rydges Southbank, 23 Palmer St, South Townsville & Palm Island PCYC 9.30am to 3.30pm
  • RAVENSHOE | Thursday 17 November 2022: Ravenshoe Town Hall, Grigg St, Ravenshoe 9.30am to 4pm
  • TULLY | Friday 18 November 2022: QCWA Hall, 5 Plumb St, Tully 9.30am to 4pm

 

What are the information sessions about?

The information sessions are for NQLC to consult with, and provide information to members of the Jirrbal community about the following important matters for which NQLC will be seeking instructions on at the upcoming Jirrbal authorisation meeting:

  • A new claim on behalf of Warrungnu People overlapping an area in the south-west of the Jirrbal #4 claim (Southern Part B Area) to be shared between Jirrbal and Warrungnu;
  • Withdrawal or dismissal of an area in the north of the Jirrbal #4 claim (Northern Part B Area); and
  • Amending the Jirrbal #4 claim group description to include an additional apical ancestor Sam Boyd and his descendants.

In addition, NQLC will be providing an update on the progress of the Jirrbal #4 claim and information on certain matters that do not require instructions at the authorisation meeting including:

  • Jirrbal and Warrungnu overlap report findings (authored by Dr Pam McGrath);
  • Apical ancestor report findings (authored by Sarah Bell);
  • Tenure separate question hearing; and
  • Consent determination timeframe for Part A

What is the purpose of these information sessions?

The purpose of the information sessions is to consult with and prepare the Jirrbal community for the authorisation meeting so that informed decisions can be made. Jirrbal People will not be asked to make any binding decisions in relation to the Jirrbal #4 claim at these information sessions. Attending on at least one of the session days is nonetheless very important for Jirrbal People.

Proposed future authorisation meeting

The authorisation meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 6 December 2022 in Atherton at which the members of the Jirrbal #4 claim group will be asked to make binding decisions, using their decision-making process. Meeting notices and further information will be posted soon.

Who may attend the information sessions?

The information sessions are for all Jirrbal People being members of the Jirrbal #4 claim group as described below and includes the descendants of Sam Boyd who is proposed to be authorised as a Jirrbal apical ancestor at the authorisation meeting.

Jirrbal People #4 Claim Group Description

The Jirrbal #4 claim group is comprised of those Aboriginal persons who are the descendants by birth or by adoption in accordance with traditional law and custom, of one or more of the following apical ancestors (listed alphabetically):
